The Muscadine Trellis by Werner Trieschmann

Seven

Two days later. Late afternoon.

DR. WAY is sitting at the table
and working at BARRY's
computer.

AURORA walks in from the left.

          AURORA
Alan.

DR. WAY doesn't look up from
the computer. AURORA walks
over to the table.

          AURORA
Do you know what time it is?

         DR. WAY
Fascinating.

          AURORA
We've been waiting. I said at 5, remember? When we get money,
we'll buy you a watch.

          DR. WAY
He has letters from Iceland and Egypt on here.

          AURORA
Sarah is about bolt. You need to come now or she'll take Olin
back.

          DR. WAY
There's this conversation - they're arguing about this virus or
bug.

          AURORA
That's Barry's computer.

          DR. WAY
I know. Some of it's technical so it's a little hard to follow.
But they're talking about the end of the world. They sound like
they know what they mean.

          AURORA
Alan, what are you doing?

          DR. WAY
There's something in this. An angle.

          AURORA
Sarah and Anna are waiting.

          DR. WAY
In a million years nobody would have figured out that this Barry,
this quiet, backwoods hillbilly, would be talking to the world.

          AURORA
Are you coming to the house?

          DR. WAY
This machine is phenomenal. This is where the future is. Right
here.

          AURORA
Are you coming to the house?

          DR. WAY
No.

          AURORA
They got Olin out of the home. Alan. So you're late. That doesn't
matter.

          DR. WAY
No, I'm not coming to the house

          AURORA
I've been looking for the keys to the car.

          DR. WAY
I have them.

          AURORA
Alan. Are you doubting yourself? That's natural. That's
expected. Everybody doubts. Everybody.

          DR. WAY
You're a baby.

          AURORA
Don't make me look like this. Come to the house.

          DR. WAY
Did I write out a guarantee at the beginning? You were strung
out at a laundromat. You could barely feed yourself.

          AURORA
That's not true.

          DR. WAY
I'm not killing myself for nothing. You aren't bringing in students
and you're aren't raising money. This is the wilderness. They
won't just drive up and start writing checks.

          AURORA
What if I love you?

          DR. WAY
That's neither here nor there.

          AURORA
What does that mean?

          DR. WAY
That's neither here nor there.

          AURORA
So you're giving up? At the first sign of trouble.

          DR. WAY
When the game is over, it's over.

          AURORA
You fraud. Everything you showed me. The dowsing.
Everything. It was all a lie.

          DR. WAY
No it wasn't.

          AURORA
You heartless fraud.

          DR. WAY
The only things that are lies are the things you don't believe.
I'll be leaving. You'll notice that some things will be missing. You
won't do anything about that and Anna won't do anything about
that. You dug those holes. I can show anybody where they are.

          AURORA
That's neither here nor there.

DR. WAY closes the lid on the
laptop, picks it up and walks off
to the right.

Lights dim to black.
